Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

Background on Conviction

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
