Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
